Welcome back to the Beauty Battle! Today it’s the battle of the cute and compact liquid lippies – the Hourglass Opaque Rouge and the OCC Lip Tars…
I’m having a moment with liquid lippies right now. The pigmentation, the long-lasting wear, the gorgeous shades on offer, I’m almost on the verge of trading in my MAC lipsticks* and converting permanently to the liquid lip. Two of the biggest offerings out there at the moment are the iconic Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars, and the luxe Hourglass Opaque Rouge. But which brand nails it when it comes to liquid lipsticks?
Hourglass Opaque Rouge
It was the Hourglass Opaque Rouge line that initially lured me from my traditional lipstick bullets to the liquid-lip darkside. The shades (especially the reds) are just to die for. My first pick from the range was the insanely gorgeous Raven, which without fail will garner me a compliment whenever I wear it. And who doesn’t want that? The Opaque Rouge lippies first won me over after I put Raven through the three course meal test. Post-gorge, I fully expected to be sporting a smeared pout a la Ronald McDonald, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see the colour hadn’t budged – it looked as perfect as when I applied it. Dinner test result – A+. The feel is incredibly comfortable on the lips, and as long as I do a quick exfoliation before application, I never suffer any dryness or flaking. The precision applicator is designed so you can line your lips with the product first and then fill in the rest, and it works perfectly used just so.
OCC Lip Tars
Lip Tars are the ultimate in ‘a little goes a long way’. All you need is a tiny bead of product on the lip brush that comes with the product, and you will be rewarded bold lick of colour that settles down to a matte finish and doesn’t budge. The Lip Tar range is famous for the rainbow colours that can be mixed and matched to create your own signature shade, however I stick to the shades straight out of the tube. Boring I know. But in saying that, these shades are two of the most go-to in my collection. Stalker is a stunning ‘true blue-based red’, which as a cool-toned gal, suits me to a tee. Memento is a soft, pretty pink with a bit of plum thrown in, and is my trusty, long-wearing daytime shade. The Lip Tars also run much better on well-moisturised lips, scrubbed of any dry patches. Lip Tars are 100% vegan products, and cruelty-free – no bunnies hurt in the making of these lippies.
The verdict: Uh oh. I have a predicament here. Both are incredible. When it comes down to it, as much as I adore Hourglass and their products, the price tags at times are not viable on a regular basis (for me anyway!) At $18-ish a pop, the OCC Lip Tars are just a tad more accessible than the Opaque Rouge, which you can pick up for $42.
