One and Only

“If you could only have one ______, what would it be and why?” This is probably the most difficult question you could ask me regarding my makeup collection. And I’m aware that that’s probably the most first world thing I’ve ever typed. If you ask me to pin down a favourite, I’ll reel off about five different products, never able commit to just one star product that outperforms the rest. Well hold on to your hats everyone, because today it’s going to happen. Thanks to the lovely Sheri at Behind the Frames for inspiring this post, it’s a toughie but I’m up for it.

It’s a newie to the collection but a total goodie – Time Balm* by theBalm. Commence box ticking: Creates the perfect base for makeup, it’s housed in theBalm’s typical too-cute packaging, and is well-priced compared to Benefit’s competing primer ($31.95 for 30 ml vs $54 for 22 ml). It’s a keeper.

I’m not ready for this one. This is hard. So so hard. Okay. If this was a desert island situation and I could only take one base product with me it would be…. I don’t know. Can I come back to this? Fabulous, carry on.

Oh good, something easy. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder because AWESOME. Hello pretty, perfected complexion. My shade du jour is Luminous Light. Next.

Napoleon Perdis Pro Palette Concealer wheel for the win. This has been a repurchase for positively donkeys years, after a Napoleon makeup artist took one look at the dark circles under my eyes and wouldn’t let me leave the store until I bought it. And although I’m fairly embarrassed about the pretty epic dark circles I must have been sporting that day, I’m ever grateful that I picked this one up.

Hmmm back into harder territory now. I would have to choose my Ambient Lighting Powder’s BFF, the Ambient Lighting Blush (which I also happen to have in “Luminous” version). These two go together like peas and carrots, tequila and lemon, Nina and Patrick… you get the idea.

I have a few much-loved highlighters on rotation, but the one I will always reach for that I know will always do the trick is MAC’s Soft and Gentle. So so so pretty.

Anastasia Brow Wiz in Brunette. I actually don’t remember life before this. All I know is my brows must have been in pretty sad shape.

I’ve tippled with a few, and although I do really like the Jouer matte bronzer, Benefit’s Hoola would win the day. Such a versatile little product, all your contouring and bronzing needs covered in one little box o’powder.

Whenever I’m asked what favourite makeup brush is, I always say both the Real Techniques Expert and Buffing brush, used one after the other like a one-two knockout punch, but if I were to choose one… It’s like choosing between children! Obviously I have no children. It would have to be the Expert Brush. Oh Buffing Brush, don’t be mad. I still love you.

Eye of Horus Goddess Mascara*. If you follow me on Instagram, you would know all about my love affair with this by now. It’s a match made in heaven between it and my lashes. Will never be without.

I really really really love eyeshadow. I’m definitely a big “eye” girl, but I’m also a lazy girl, so an eyeshadow that I can bang on as an all-over shade when I’m in a rush and still look amazing will forever be repurchased. If I had to pick (which obviously I do), it would be Sunday Riley’s Prismasilk Eyeshadow in Lady Godiva. If you haven’t had the pleasure of trying Sunday Riley’s gorgeous range of eyeshadows, then off to a Mecca with you immediately.

It took me a while but I feel like I’ve finally got to grips with the feline flick, and the product that helped me finally master it was the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner. Glides on beautifully, super black and really does stay on all day.

I’m not a big lipgloss wearer at all – throwing back to when I had very long hair, if even the slightest gasp of wind blew that hair across my face while I was wearing gloss, it was game over. Lipgloss IN ALL OF THE PLACES. So in that vein, anything non-sticky does it for me, and I’m yet to find the perfect product. Sooo – I’m going to have to leave this one blank! If anyone has any good gloss suggestions, please let me know!

Another tricky one. Oooh what to choose. I know I should be choosing a Tom Ford lippie because those things are g-damn expensive and also completely gorgeous, but I think when it comes down to it, it’s got to be MAC’s Plumful. It’s the lippie I wear when I can’t decide what lippie I want to wear, because it goes with pretty much any look – daytime, nighttime, all of the time.

Really? You’re really going to make me choose? Oh-kay…By Terry Cover Expert. Satisfied? Just don’t tell the others, I don’t want a mutiny in the ranks.

How would you go narrowing down your top product from each category? What products can you not live without? Let me know in the comments!

Yep I luuurve those blushes, it’s gorgeous, definitely grab one when you can! No worries :) xx

  • Tasha

Great post! Sheri tagged me as well, so I’ll be having the same tough time choosing my faves haha! You’ve chosen a lot of luxe prods though, but I guess if you can only have one, may as well go for your exxy ones! Oh, for non-sticky gloss, I love the NYX butter glosses and Maybelline Elixirs, btw :)

Yes it is tough isn’t it! I like to have a good mix of luxe/drugstore prods in my collection, but I guess the ones that I research and especially save for do end up being some of my all-time faves. Thank you for the gloss suggestions, I’ve been meaning to try the NYX butter glosses for ages! xx
