Beauty Battle: The Eyeshadow Sticks

Beauty Battle - themaquillage.com.au

Not a single review I’ve read about the By Terry Ombre Blackstars has had a bad word to say about them, and it’s no wonder – they rock. What doesn’t rock so much however, is the price tag. Even after Mecca’s price drop, they still sit at the $56 mark, and if you are looking to pick up more than one shade, things get a bit pricey. As Target is currently (until today! Get in quick!) offering 30% off the NYX range, I picked up one of the Glam Shadow Sticks in the hopes of possibly finding a significantly affordable alternative. So how did it match up to By Terry’s cult cream eyeshadows?

NYX Glam Shadow Stick in Elegant Marble
This is SUCH  a gorgeous shade. Worn alone, It gives a subtle wash of shimmery colour all over the lid for a daytime look, or it could easily used as a base for a more dramatic night look. When I applied it I didn’t notice any of the dreaded fallout, which I always value in a product with a little glitter involved! I was also a big fan the tapered end of the stick, which made it easy to apply along the lower lash line. I did notice that the texture of the cream wasn’t overly soft, and the product could drag and bounce a little as I swiped it across my eye. The cream warmed up while I was using it, making application easier, and I had no problems blending it out. I always use an eye primer (NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow base) under my shadows, and the Glam Shadow lasted well on top of it. All in all, I’m a fan!

By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon.
This is one of my favourite shades from the Ombre Blackstar range, and I think it’s one of the most versatile. I use it as either an all-over-and-go shade, or in the socket and crease as a contour. Longevity-wise, it’s unbeatable. Removing a swatch is akin to trying to wash off a liquid lipstick stain – scrubbing is futile. The pigmentation is also incredible, and it only takes a single swipe to achieve an opaque layer. The amount of shimmer is just right, adding a lovely subtle sparkle to your eye makeup. The cream is soft and glides on smoothly, but I make sure I work with it and blend it quickly before it sets. The Blackstars’ biggest drawback for me is the packaging, as it wasn’t before long that the eyeshadow stick had detached from the casing and was falling out if held the wrong way. I’ve actually had a few packaging issues with several By Terry products, which I don’t think should be the case given the pricing of the range.

The verdict: I do love the Ombre Blackstars. The beautiful shades, the longevity, the pigmentation, the texture… Amaze. But! The packaging issues and price point deter me from adding any more to my makeup collection. I was really impressed with the Elegant Marble Glam Shadow Stick, and given you can pick up a whopping five shades from the range for the price of one Blackstar seals the deal for me. I better head back to Target before the sale finishes!

Have you tried either of these products? What did you think?

Great comparison post! I’m yet to try any eyeshadow crayons (I know, I’m such a terrible blogger) but the NYX ones sound pretty good! That shade is beautiful! I have heard raves about the By Terry ones as well, that’s totally annoying about the packaging though! Definitely not what you would expect for such an expensive product.

I know, they really need to pick up their game with the packaging. Two lipsticks I’ve purchased from them both snapped at the base within days of first using them, and I’ve never had that problem before with any other brand. Ridiculous!

They both look really pretty! I don’t think I can ever fork out $56 but the NYX one definitely seems like a good option. I didn’t even know about the 30% sale until I was there yesterday and was like RESISSTTT.

Hahaha, yep it’s hard to resist that pull of a sale! I would definitely go with the NYX ones after doing this post, just too good value to pass up.

That is a hefty price tag!!! For that it would have to be 100% perfect! But it is a gorgeous color. Both of them are actually

It is isn’t it! And it’s really disappointing to have issues with packaging when you’ve forked out that much… I’m glad I’ve found the NYX to be a great alternative!

loved both the shades, Will definitely try the NYX one. By Terry is gorgeous, have been lemming for these, but the price, damn !

Yep, the price is a bit of a deterrent, especially when they can’t get the packaging right! Definitely recommend the NYX x
