A bold, statement lip matched with a lick of black eyeliner and a flawless base is by far and away one of my fave makeup looks. At the moment, there is a select group of bold lippies that I’ve been reaching for lately, especially as we march through summer and towards Christmas….
Sleek True Colour Lipstick in Vamp, $10.95 , available at Lipstick Republic
I very recently welcomed Vamp to my bold lip party, after I was completely enabled by Alix from I Covet Thee (it looks INCREDIBLE on her). Sleek describes Vamp as a “matte, brown based dark red”, and it really is true to its name, this shade has got “vampy” written all over it. This is my pick for a Christmas party look, the deep red has a real festive feel, and I love how it manages to warm up my usually cool pallor. You can’t really go past the price either, $10.95 is the best I’ve paid for a lipstick in a long while.

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Vera, $44 available at Mecca Cosmetica/Maxima
Full Review here. Out of the myriad of shades that made up NARS’ Audacious lipstick range, Vera was the one to jump out at me straight away. It’s a bright raspberry which I find to be a little subtler than the real in-your-face bolds – a bit more grown up, if that makes sense? But it still holds its own as a statement lip. I’ve been doubling this shade up as a complementary cream cheek colour, warming it up on the back of my hand with my finger, dabbing on little by little, and blending out with my stippling brush.

MAC Rebel, $36, available at MAC
Ah Rebel, my old friend. So purple, much bold, very statement. Frequently found in the lipstick stash of makeup mavens the world over. I was initially intimidated by this shade, and I guiltily avoided it when sifting through my lippie collection, but the trick has been learning how to tailor it to me. I recently started using MAC’s lip liner in Magenta underneath to lift the pinker tones, and blending a little Napoleon Perdis’ Pro Lip lipstick in Blanc to take the dark edge off, while keeping the statement look.

Tom Ford Wild Ginger, $68, available at David Jones
My go-to ‘sunny day in summer’ shade. It’s also about the only orange-red I can pull off, which is a tough thing to achieve indeed on my ol’ cool toned skin. Wild Ginger was my first foray into the Tom Ford lipstick range, and therefore the first to get me hooked on these eye-wateringly expensive lippies (damn you WG). They are just SO comfortable on the lips, all creamy and moisturising, but you don’t sacrifice any wear time or pigmentation. They are just all round fab.

Antipodes Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Hot Pink), $30.95, available from Antipodes
Full review here. While we are on the subject of shades I find difficult to pull off, bright pink is another on this list. You’ll never see me sporting Candy Yum Yum round these parts, because sadly it looks rather ridiculous on me. So you can imagine my excitement when I finally tracked down a bold pink I could wear, which came in the form of Hit Me With Your Best Shot. This shade is a gun at brightening up my face and skin tone, and I tend to reach for it on days where the required 8 hours sleep sadly wasn’t achieved.
