A bright, bold lipstick with simple eye makeup is undoubtedly one of my favourite ways to brighten up my face (and my day), but lately I’ve been shifting the focus and letting my eye makeup take centre stage, with a soft nude lip as the supporting act. Ever since this post I’ve rediscovered the dramatic eye/nude lip combo, and I’ve been rounding up a little collection of go-to shades that are just that right shade of nude for me – when I say the right shade, I mean they generally need to have an element of pink in them, otherwise I tend to look like I’m desperately ill, or worse yet, dead. Not pretty. No danger of the corpse look with this beauties though…
Sleek True Colour Lipstick in Barely There, $10.95 at Lipstick Republic
The value for money you get with these lippies reminds me of the Shanghai Suzy range, in that it’s completely awesome. Sleek describes this shade as a ‘nude peach’ and the formula as a ‘sheen’, but it actually sits on the lips as more of a creamy matte, while being packed full of pigmentation. The name “Barely There” is a bit deceiving, there’s actually A Lot There, with good lasting power as well.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bettina, $34 at Mecca
The Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are thoroughly well loved by makeup mavens everywhere, and for a very good reason – they’re super quick and easy to use, very pigmented and long wearing, and feel nice ‘n comfortable on the lips. Can’t ask for much more than that I suppose! If you’re a fan of your ‘my lips but better’ shades, Bettina is a great one to try. It’s a muted pink that really does make my lips look better.
NUDESTIX Lip and Cheek Colour in Whisper, $29.95 at Lipstick Republic
I couldn’t chat about my fave nudes without mentioning NUDESTIX, could I? Whisper is the closest shade I have to a true nude, but has just enough pink in it to avoid that deathly ill look. This pencil has been coming everywhere with me lately in it’s own handy little carry tin with a mirror, so I can touch up both my lips and cheeks at the same time. Seriously easy beauty.
Australis Velourlips in Hon-O-Loo-Loo, $9.95 at Priceline
The Velourlips are what I turn to when I’m after a guaranteed true-to-the-tube colour and a no-budge guarantee. I also love the finish that these lip creams dry down to, a soft matte which (I find) isn’t drying on my normally temperamental lips – I do make sure I give my lips a good scrub before applying though. Hon-O-Loo-Loo is that perfect mix of pink and beige.
Hourglass Opaque Rouge in Canvas, $38 at Mecca
After my great success with the Opaque Rouge in Raven, the shade Canvas was next on my list to try, and while it’s perhaps not as long wearing as Raven, it’s certainly up there with comfort on the lips and pigmentation. The shade Canvas is a bit of a chameleon – in the tube it looks like an unassuming pink-nude, but wears on my lips as more of a deeper rose – it’s still soft enough to take a backseat to dramatic eyes. And it’s just all round pretty.
